Smell Graffiti is an art project that was originally designed during my artist residency in Vienna, Austria for the Paraflows urban hacking conference in 2009. The concept is simple and powerful. Using potent esters and repurposed industrial atomization canisters one can create an artificial invisible smellscape. One of the experiments was to juxtapose heavily urbanized areas such as underground rail stations with the smell of soil mixed with freshly cut grass to remind people of the rural experience. Other playful and incongruous scents were employed like mint bubble gum, oatmeal cookies and coffee. The project was featured on Fast Company, PKSF and the communication design publication Yorokobu.
